Five US-led troops killed in Afghanistan

Five US-led troops have been killed in accidents and ambushes in Afghanistan amid a surge against foreign forces in the country.

Three soldiers died on Sunday as a result of a road accident, the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said Sunday.

One soldier was killed in a bomb explosion and another in an ambush in the same volatile region, ISAF said.

The exact location of the incidents and the nationality of the deceased soldiers were not announced. However most of the troops deployed in Afghanistan are American.

The latest deaths bring the number of NATO troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year to 236.

Last year was the deadliest year for foreign troops stationed in Afghanistan under the command of the United States, which led the invasion of the country nine years ago. A total of 520 US-led soldiers died in 2009.

NATO currently has about 130,000 soldiers in the war-torn country. The US has plans to deploy 30,000 extra troops by August.
