Foreign -backed Terrorists attack Syrian security forces near Latakia

Members of an armed group have carried out an attack against a Syrian military unit stationed near the northwestern port city of Latakia.

Reports say several Syrian troops were killed and a number of others were injured as the Syrian military unit foiled an infiltration attempt by the armed group on Saturday.

Meanwhile, state media said three Syrian soldiers and two members of a “terrorist group” were killed in clashes between security forces and armed groups in the northwestern city of Aleppo on Saturday.

The Saturday fighting was not the first deadly incident in Aleppo in recent months.

On March 18, Syrian state media said two people were killed and dozens of others wounded in a car bombing carried out by terrorists in an Aleppo neighborhood.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011 and many people, including members of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

On April 27, SANA said at least 11 people were killed and dozens of others were injured in a bomb attack in Damascus.

The latest clashes between security forces and armed groups in Syria come despite the presence of United Nations observers tasked with monitoring a ceasefire that took effect on April 12.

The ceasefire was part of a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in March.

Fifteen UN observers are currently in Syria and the number is expected to reach 30 by Monday.

Norwegian Major General Robert Mood has also headed to Damascus to take charge of the UN observer mission.

The first group of the UN observers arrived in Damascus late on April 15. The observers have been approved for the mission according to UNSC Resolution 2042 passed on April 14.

On April 21, the UN Security Council met and unanimously voted on a resolution to send a mission of 300 observers to Syria.
