Former US President George H. W. Bush has broken a bone in his neck after a fall in his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Bush, a Republican, was injured on Wednesday and he remains hospitalized at Portland’s Maine Medical Center on Thursday, according to his spokesman Jim McGrath.

McGrath said the 41st US president will not need surgery but will be in a neck brace for “at least a couple of months.”

The hospital confirmed Bush’s condition was stable but declined to say when he would be released.

Bush’s granddaughter, Jenna Bush Hager, said the family is optimistic that he will recuperate soon.

“Thanks for all your thoughts+prayers for our dear Gamps,” she tweeted.

Bush, who celebrated his 91st birthday last month, reportedly suffers from a type of Parkinson’s disease and uses a motorized scooter to move around.

The father of former President George W. Bush was also hospitalized during Christmas 2012 for a bronchitis-related cough and remained there for two months.

Bush, who headed the CIA from 1976 to 1977, served two terms as Ronald Reagan’s vice president before being elected president in 1988.
