At least four people have died and two others have been wounded in two shootings in New York and authorities are searching for a lone gunman, police say.

Investigators said Wednesday that they are still searching for Kurt Myers, the alleged gunman accused of going on a shooting spree in upstate New York between Syracuse and Albany.

Myers is suspected of shooting dead two people at a car wash in the village of Herkimer, two others at a barbershop in the village of Mohawk, and injuring two more people during the early morning spree.

Police also believed the suspect set fire to his home in Mohawk.

Area schools have been placed on lockdown due to the shootings.

This comes as over 2,600 people have been killed in gun related events in the United States since December 14, 2012 when 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed 20 children and six adults before killing himself at the Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Connecticut.

On December 24, 2012, a gunman lured New York officials to his home by setting ablaze his house, killing two firefighters and injuring two others.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the US.
