Turkish fighter jets have penetrated Iraqi airspace, attacking the bases of Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Zap region in northern Iraq.

Four Turkish warplanes bombarded seven PKK targets during the operations carried out on Tuesday, Turkey’s Dogan news agency reported. There have been no reports of casualties.

The jets returned to Diyarbakir Airbase after completing their mission.

The PKK has been fighting for an autonomous Kurdish region inside Turkey since the 1980s. The conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead.

The attack comes as Turkey says peace talks between Ankara and the group are underway and Turkish media say the jailed leader of the PKK Abdullah Ocalan may announce a cease-fire in the coming weeks.
