France test-fires new ballistic missile

France has successfully test-fired its new M51 ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine after three land-based firings, the Defense Ministry said.

“The firing was completed by the Arms General Management Office, Jan. 27, 2010 at 9:27 a.m. from the Bay of Audierne, Finisterre, from the submarine Le Terrible,” the ministry said in a statement.

The M51 strategic missile has a range of 8,000 kilometers and enjoys greater accuracy than the current M45 ballistic missile.

The test came after three land-based firings between 2006 and 2008. Six additional flight tests have been planned for the missile before it enters service this year.

“This test marks an important step in the modernization and adaptation of France’s deterrence within the strict respect of its international engagements,” the statement suggested.

The M51 is due to enter service this year on Le Terrible, the last of four new-generation ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) of the Le Triomphant class in the French Navy’s strategic force.
