The US has sent a top military commander to Jordon to discuss possible strikes on neighboring Syria as the West has been urged by Russia not to jump to conclusions on an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria,

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey was set to meet with his Jordanian counterparts and other regional defense chiefs during his visit.

The talks would focus on the ongoing “dynamic security environment” in the region, The Hill reported citing a Pentagon spokeswoman.

“The exchange is designed to increase the collective understanding of the impact of regional conflicts on nations, foster ongoing dialogue and improve security relationships,” Defense Department spokeswoman Lt. Col. Cathy Wilkinson said.

Wilkinson said Dempsey’s visit was not triggered by recent events in Syria.

On Monday, Dempsey said any US military intervention in Syria “would not be militarily decisive” in ending the unrest, but would draw American forces deeper into the conflict.

US warships are already on station off the coast of Syria ready to strike targets in the Arab county, where has been a scene of severe fights between government forces and militants since two and a half years ago.

The Syrian government has allowed a UN inspection team, who is now in Syria, to examine a site near Damascus that came under an alleged chemical attack on August 21.

The US already warned that it will attack Syria if the probe shows that the Syrian government has used chemical arms.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Sunday that all countries should wait for the results of the probe and “show prudence and avoid tragic mistakes” by jumping to conclusions about the incident.

“Our American and European partners must understand what catastrophic consequences this kind of politics would have for the region, for the Arab and Islamic world as a whole,” Lukashevich warned.

Head of the so-called opposition Syrian National Coalition, George Sabra, blamed the government forces for the alleged chemical attack that have killed hundreds of civilians. The Syrian government rejected the allegation, saying the foreign-backed militants carried out the deadly attack.
