US speeds up decision for arming Syria militants with lethal weapons

The US may approve delivery of lethal weapons to militants in Syria as soon as this week as Syrian army is making rapid advances against the foreign-backed militants, a new report says.

The Sunday report by the Associated Press noted that US officials believe they now need to “re-evaluate options” on Syria and will be doing so at the White House this week.

Quoting unnamed sources, the report said the White House meetings are planned over the coming days, as Syrian forces prepare for an attack on the key city of Homs to cut off Syria’s armed opposition from the south of the country.

The report stated that Obama administration will also weigh the merits of a move to send in US air power to enforce a no-fly zone over Syria.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry has put off a planned trip to Israel and three other Middle East countries to take part in the White House meetings.

The Syrian army has regained control of the strategic city of Qusayr near Lebanon’s border with Syrian forces making significant advances against militants in other parts of the country.

Last week, Syrian troops established control over the strategic town of Qusayr following weeks of heavy clashes with foreign-backed militants.

Syrian troops were backed by forces from the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah during the Qusayr operation.

The Syrian Army is now in control of most of the towns and villages near the border with Lebanon.

There have been reports of heavy clashes between government forces and militants in Aleppo, Lattakia, Idlib, Deir Ezzor and several Damascus suburbs.

The Syria crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed in the unrest.

The West and its regional allies such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants.
