At least two Turkish soldiers have been killed and 24 others wounded when militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a military police station in Turkey’s eastern province of Agri.

PKK members used two tons of explosives to attack the station on a highway near the town of Dogubayazit, located 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) east of the capital, Ankara, on Sunday, the regional governor’s office said in a statement.

The wounded soldiers were transported to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment; however, there was no word on their conditions.

The PKK has stepped up its attacks against Turkish security forces in the past days after Turkey’s military began to bomb the group’s positions in northern Iraq.

Earlier on Sunday, a Turkish soldier was killed and four others wounded when a mine explosion hit their convoy on a road in the Midyat district of the Mardin province in southeastern Turkey, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported. The early morning attack was also blamed on the PKK.

The development came a day after another land mine explosion killed a Turkish lieutenant and injured two soldiers on the Erzurum-Kars highway. The Saturday attack was also believed to have been carried out by PKK members.

On July 31, two Turkish police were killed in a gun attack on a police headquarters in Turkey’s southern region of Adana.

PKK gunmen fired on police headquarters in the city of Pozanti, situated 322 kilometers (200 miles) east of Ankara, triggering an exchange of gunfire that left two police as well as two militants dead.
