At least 19 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers have been killed in an attack on a military checkpoint in the eastern province of Kunar.

Guerrillas carried out the attack in Ghazi Abad District at about 3:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, said provincial spokesman, Abdul Ghani Musamim.

The Afghan official also stated that seven other Afghan soldiers had gone missing following the attack on the Sher Ghashi military post, located in the Tunk area of Ghazi Abad.

Meanwhile, provincial police chief, Brigadier General Abdul Habib Sayyedkhel, said clashes between the militants and the Afghan army were still underway in the area.

The police source added that Afghan government forces managed to inflict heavy losses on the militants during the clashes.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack so far, although most of such offensives are conducted by the Taliban.

Some reports are also pointing fingers at militant groups in neighboring Pakistan for the deadly incident, describing it as a retaliatory operation for a recent killing of Pakistani soldiers near a border point.

The Pakistani government announced on Saturday that 27 Pakistani soldiers were kidnapped and then killed on the Afghan soil. Kabul, however, has dismissed the allegation.
