Gunmen kill 2 soldiers in Egypt’s Sinai

Unknown gunmen have shot and killed two Egyptian soldiers in an attack on a military checkpoint in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

A security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said on Thursday that the attack took place near the town of Sheikh Zuweid near the border with the Gaza Strip.
The official added: “Four other soldiers were injured in the attack.”
Since the ouster of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi on July 3, gunmen have launched almost daily attacks there, killing several members of security forces.
On Wednesday, unidentified assailants opened fire on a military checkpoint and a vehicle belonging to the army in the town of El-Arish, the capital and the largest city of North Sinai.
On July 13, Egypt’s security officials said unknown gunmen attacked El Arish International Airport with rocket-propelled grenades.
A day earlier, militants attacked a police armored vehicle at a security checkpoint in the peninsula, killing a policeman and injuring a police conscript.
On July 10, an army spokesman said the car of a senior military commander “came under heavy fire, which led to clashes between security forces and the terrorist elements” in the region.
Security officials said the commander survived the attack unharmed but one girl was hurt during the exchange of fire and died later in hospital.
