Pakistani police say gunmen have shot and killed a newly elected member of the provincial assembly in Hangu, a town in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Senior police officer Bin Yamin Khan said on Monday that Farid Khan was killed when armed men sprayed his vehicle with bullets, The Associated Press reported.

Khan and his driver died on the spot while the guard sustained injuries in the attack.

The police officer said Khan was elected from Hangu as an independent candidate and later joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party , led by cricket star Imran Khan.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

An official with the PTI party condemned the killing, saying, “We are communicating with the leadership, after the decision of leadership a proper investigation team will be formed to investigate the reason and motive of murder of Farid Khan.”
