Halahle, Dhiab end their historic 77-day hunger strike

Administrative detainees Thaer Halahle and Bilal Dhiab have called off their hunger strike on Monday after an epic 77 days that entered the annals of history as the longest in human history.

Safa, a Palestinian news agency, quoted relatives of both detainees as saying that they decided to end their hunger strike after receiving a written statement from the Israeli prison service that their detention would not be extended.

They noted that Halahle’s detention expires on 5/6/2012 while that of Dhiab ends on 17/8/2012.

Both detainees called their relatives after midnight Monday and informed them of their decision, which followed an agreement between the Palestinian prisoners and the IPS on ending the massive hunger strike in return for meeting the prisoners’ demands.

Halahle and Dhiab, who were transferred to hospital more than once during their hunger strike due to worsening health condition, said that their health was good and that they were informed of their release after completion of their administrative period in custody.
