Lebanese security forces have detained a militant suspected of being a leading figure in a Takfiri terrorist group which has targeted Iranian interests in Beirut over the past months, Press TV reports.

Press TV correspondent in Lebanon said Hassan Abu Afleh was detained on Saturday but his arrest had remained secret until after investigations were completed.

Abu Afleh is suspected of recruiting bombers and assembling car bombs for the al-Qaeda-affiliated Abdullah Azzam Brigades.

The terrorist group claimed responsibility for the car bomb attack that hit near Iran’s cultural center in the Lebanese capital, killing five people.

Reports from Beirut said Abu Afleh’s cousin, Mohamed, was also arrested in a pre-dawn raid, hours before the Wednesday bomb explosion.

The Abdullah Azzam Brigades earlier targeted the Iranian Embassy in Beirut on November 19, 2013.

The back-to-back bomb blasts killed over two dozen people, including Iran’s cultural attaché in Beirut, and left at least 150 others injured.

The terrorist group’s leader Majed al-Majed was arrested in early January but died days later from poor health in a Lebanese military hospital.

Majed, a Saudi national, was a high-profile terrorist also wanted by several other countries.

Last week, Lebanese security forces managed to track down another leading terrorist identified as Naim Abbas.

Abbas reportedly worked for the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). ISIL is an al-Qaeda-linked Takfiri group which has been fighting government troops in both Syria and Iraq.
