Hamas will boycott illegal local vote

Hamas has announced that it would boycott the upcoming local elections in the West Bank, saying the vote would increase division among Palestinians.

The Palestinian Authority decided last month to hold the municipal elections in the West Bank on July 17 without the participation of the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian resistance movement said in a statement on Monday that the vote is illegal.

“As a result, we announce our decision to boycott and not take any part in the municipal elections,” it added.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Jihad movement, another major Palestinian group, said in a separate statement that it would also boycott the poll.

The group, also based in Gaza, pointed out that the elections have been announced unilaterally without a nation-wide consensus.
