Hayya: PLC will continue to do its duties

Member of Hamas’s political bureau Khalil al-Hayya has affirmed the Palestinian Legislative Council (PIC) will continue to assume its duties and will not be affected by any decisions issued by the constitutional court in the West Bank.

“The Legislative Council will keep doing its work until another council comes through elections,” Hayya said in a speech he delivered during an event held on Thursday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Israeli war on Gaza.

“We will not recognize the constitutional court, which was established illegally, nor will we recognize its invalid decisions,” the Hamas official added.

He stressed the importance of achieving the national unity and ending the division on the basis of preserving the constants and having a complete political partnership without monopolizing the decision-making process, adding that the Palestinian people need such unity.

De facto Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas recently announced, with no regard for the Palestinian constitution and law, that his constitutional court, which he formed in 2016, decided to dissolve the PLC and called for holding legislative elections within six months.
