Honduras de facto leader calls for new talks

Roberto-Micheletti-Manuel-Zelaya

Honduran de facto leader Roberto Micheletti has called on ousted President Manuel Zelaya to rejoin dialogue to form a unity government.

“The government of Honduras reiterates its readiness to proceed with the implementation of the agreement and urges the other side to return to the dialogue framework to enable the formation of a government of national unity and reconciliation,” Micheletti said through a spokesman.

The deposed leader quickly responded by declaring the offer a “non-starter.”

The ousted president rejected the latest offer of dialogue unless he’s restored to power.

Zelaya pulled out of power-sharing talks after leader Roberto Michelette decided to form a government without Zelaya’s representatives.

He urged voters to boycott the upcoming elections and called on the international community not to recognize the results as legitimate, unless he is returned to power before they are held.

Zelaya also told his supporters to resume protesting in the streets.

The developments coem after a US brokered deal to resolve the country’s political crisis collapsed on Friday.
