Imran Khan censures Pakistan premier

The leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Party has accused Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of leniency regarding the US killer drone strikes in the country.

Imran Khan says that Islamabad has failed to adopt a firm stance against Washington regarding the deadly attacks.

The PTI leader also censured the administration of Sharif for refusing to take the issue of drone strikes to the UN Security Council, which under Chapter Seven can take binding action against the attacks.

The deadly US drone strikes in Pakistan has intensified the anti-US sentiment among Pakistanis.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokeswoman told a weekly news conference on December 26 that Islamabad will raise the issue of the assassination drone attacks carried out in the northwestern tribal region of the country at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) if the raids continue.

On December 18, the UN passed a resolution demanding that states using drone strikes comply with their obligations under international law and the UN Charter.

On December 25, four people were killed in the latest round of US drone attacks targeting an area near the town of Miranshah in Pakistan’s North Waziristan Province, which borders Afghanistan.

The United States has been carrying out killer drone operations in several countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen.

Washington claims militants are the targets of the attacks, but local officials say civilians have been the main victims of such airstrikes.

The United Nations says the CIA-operated drone strikes in Pakistan and other countries pose a growing challenge to the rule of international law.

The UN and several human rights organizations have identified the United States as the world’s number one user of “targeted killings,” largely due to its drone attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
