In Afghanistan, US kidnaps students

The detention of two Afghan students by American forces has stoked public anger in the western city of Herat amid rising anti-US sentiments in the troubled region.

Herat University students have gathered in front of the governor’s office to protest the arrests. Protesters say American soldiers have “abducted” the two students. They have threatened to continue protests until both students are freed.

Local officials say US forces made the arrests without informing Afghan security officials, a Press TV correspondent reported on Tuesday.

The US military has yet to comment on the issue.

US-led forces disregard local culture and they have targeted several civilian and educational centers in different parts of the war-torn country.

Several Afghan civilians have been killed in US custody at the notorious Bagram Prison or other detention centers over the past months.

More than 100,000 Afghans have been killed since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

The loss of civilian lives at the hand of foreign forces has led to a dramatic increase in anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan.

US-led forces have stepped up attacks in Afghanistan under Washington’s new war strategy, which aims to reduce its military presence next year.

There are more than 150,000 US-led foreign forces in Afghanistan.
