India’s security forces in Indian-administered Kashmir have clashed with Muslim mourners on the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him).

Clashes erupted in the city of Srinagar after Indian forces placed a ban on religious processions.

Several people were arrested and taken into custody during the clashes.

Indian authorities have also imposed a strict curfew and other restrictions in most parts of the city.

On November 13, Indian police and military soldiers attacked hundreds of Muslims attending religious processions marking Tasua, the ninth day of the month of Muharram, in Srinagar.

According to two officers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the scuffles broke out when police and security forces tried to disperse the people, using batons and tear gas.

Large gatherings have been prohibited in Indian-administered Kashmir for years since an insurgency broke out over its independence from India.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 60 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both countries claim the region in full but each only has control over a section of the territory.
