In US, patriotism means militarism: Analyst

The US governments’ belligerent policies have made patriotism synonymous with militarism for Americans, an analyst writes in a column for Press TV.

“In the United States patriotism and militarism have become synonyms,” Paul Craig Roberts wrote in his column for the Press TV website.

He added that the US presidents have become “worst enemies” of the Americans because of their repeated declaration of the so-called “war on terror.”

“In the 21st century, Americans’ worst enemies are not Iran, Russia, and China. America’s worst enemies are our own presidents who have declared repeatedly that the orchestrated ‘war on terror’ gives them the right to set aside the civil liberties guaranteed to every citizen by the US Constitution,” wrote Roberts.

He said the US executive bodies have “stripped US citizens of their civil liberties” and are instead “stocking up vast amounts of ammunition.”

The analyst stated that the US Department for Homeland Security’s acquisition of 2,717 mine-resistant armored personnel carriers is a sign of the American executive branch “arming itself so heavily against the American people.”

Roberts said so many wars launched by the US since the end of World War II have all been overseas and have had nothing to “do with defending the US population from foreign threats.”

“Clearly, wars do not protect the lives of civilians. The notion that soldiers are dying for us is false. Non-combatants are the main victims of war,” he wrote.
