Iran adds 2 more light Ghadir submarines to naval fleet

A senior Iranian commander says two more domestically- manufactured light Ghadir submarines have joined Iran’s naval fleet as part of efforts to upgrade the country’s defense capabilities.

Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari told IRNA that the submarines, completely designed and produced by Iranian experts, would enhance the Islamic Republic’s naval capabilities.

He added that all parts of the Ghadir class submarines including hull, radar equipment and advanced defense systems have been manufactured inside the country.

They have improved the protection and defense capabilities of Iran’s Armed Forces under the sea, Sayyari stated.

In November, 2011, Iran’s Navy Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Gholam Reza Khadem-Bigham announced that three more Ghadir class submarines have been added to the country’s naval fleet.

He added that the submarines are capable of launching torpedoes and operating in shallow waters.

The Ghadir submarine was first unveiled in 2007. The 120-ton vessel has excellent shallow depth performance and can conduct prolonged coastal missions.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in essential military equipment and systems.

Iran has repeatedly assured other nations, especially its neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.
