Indian President Shri Pranab Mukherjee says Iran and India have a special relationship rooted in history and tradition and New Delhi is interested in expanding relations with Tehran.

During a meeting with the new Iranian ambassador to India, Gholamreza Ansari, in New Delhi on Tuesday, Mukherjee said India wants good relations with all countries and attaches great significance to its ties with certain countries — including Iran and China — since such relations date back centuries and have their roots in numerous affinities.

He added that the world is currently facing many problems, which can be resolved through the active participation of nations and close cooperation between governments.

The Indian president also said the structure of the United Nations needs to be revised and improved so that the international body can meet the needs of all human beings and resolve political crises across the globe.

Mukherjee stated that India has an active presence in various issues and is ready to step up its political efforts within the framework of the United Nations.

Ansari said Iran-India relations are deeply-rooted, and Iranian history is vividly manifested all over India.

The Iranian ambassador also said there is great potential for the expansion of economic interactions between Iran and India.
