Iran Army warns off US recon plane

Commander of Iran’s Army Major General Ataollah Salehi says Iranian forces have used their anti-aircraft system to warn away a US reconnaissance plane.

“A US reconnaissance aircraft approached our war games on Monday, but left the area after receiving a warning from our anti-aircraft system,” Fars News Agency quoted Maj. Gen. Ataollah Salehi as saying.

The Iranian navy kicked off the eight-day maneuvers dubbed Velayat 89 on May 5. The drills, backed by the Air Force and the Army, stretch from the Strait of Hormuz to the north of the Indian Ocean.

The strategic Strait of Hormuz is a waterway through which a large percentage of the world’s oil shipments pass.

Iranian military officials have stressed that the aim of the military exercises is to send a message of peace and friendship to regional states and show foreign powers that Persian Gulf states are capable of maintaining their own security.
