Iran arrests 8 main terrorist elements: Intelligence minister

Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi says security forces have identified and arrested eight main elements of Takfiri terrorist groups planning to carry out attacks across the country.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Alavi added that Iranian security forces had managed to foil an organized plot by Takfiri groups to disrupt celebrations marking the 38th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, which fell on February 10 this year.

“In the operation carried out on February 3-9, a secret network of terrorist elements was identified near Tehran and in some western and eastern provinces of the country and eight individuals of its key members were arrested,” he said.

“All those arrested were non-Iranian nationals and some of them had links with a ringleader of a Takfiri group, who has recently been killed,” the minister added.

He said the Takfiri elements had been arranging the supply of Kalashnikov and other terrorist equipment to carry out attacks in Tehran and a number of other Iranian cities under direct command of individuals stationed in some neighboring countries.

Alavi noted that the operation revealed hidden links between the Islamic Republic’s enemies and their Takfiri mercenaries.

The minister’s comments came a day after Iran’s Attorney General Mohammad Ja’far Montazeri said the country had identified and arrested in the vicinity of the country’s capital a number of Daesh elements planning to carry out acts of sabotage during rallies celebrating the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The senior Iranian judicial official emphasized that if the resistance front, supported by Iran, had not stood up against terrorists, Daesh Takfiri terrorists would have reached the country’s borders.
