The Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs has censured the killing of civilians in terrorist attacks in Iraq, saying the Islamic Republic supports the Iraqi government’s efforts to counter terrorism.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Thursday that Iraq’s security would guarantee regional stability and that the supporters of insecurity in Iraq undermined regional security.

The Iranian diplomat made the remarks in a meeting with Iraqi Undersecretary for Management and Technical Affairs Mohammad al-Dorki.

Amir-Abdollahian also stated that insecurity in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon would serve the interests of the Israeli regime.

On March 19, 2003, the United Stated invaded Iraq under the pretext of wiping out the stocks of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) belonging to the regime of the executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. However, no such weapons were ever discovered in the country.

Hundreds of thousands of people were killed and Iraq’s infrastructure was destroyed following the US-led invasion and subsequent occupation of the country.

Meanwhile, Dorki hailed cordial relations between Tehran and Baghdad and called for the continuation of close consultations between the two countries on bilateral ties and regional developments.

The two sides also called on the international community to address measures of countering terrorism.
