Iran backs Mideast democratic currents
Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani says the Islamic Republic supports the democratic movements in the region but opposes foreign military interference carried out under the pretext of democratization.

Larijani said in an interview with the Arab news channel, Al-Arabiya, in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum on Monday “We support the democratic movements in regional countries and consider them part of people’s rights.”
Larijani made the remarks on the sidelines of the 8th General Assembly Meeting of the Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU). The two-day event kicked off in Khartoum on Monday.
Larijani further underlined Iran’s consistent approach toward the developments in the region. He said “Our stance toward regional developments that have occurred in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Syria is the same.”
The Iranian official added “We are against any military interference in countries for democratizing them, because any democracy that is exported into counties with weapons lays the foundation for dependant tyranny,”.
Larijani added, “I believe countries that send arms to Syria and intend to disturb the situation in this country must be held accountable.”
Iran stresses that the crisis in the Arab state must be resolved politically, announcing its support for the plans proposed by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to end the conflict.
