Iran blasts UNSC reactionary policies

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has criticized certain permanent members of the UN Security Council for employing backward reactionary policies.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the G15 summit of 18 developing countries in Tehran on Monday, the Iranian president said certain permanent members of the UN Security Council are still living in the late 1940s and “expect other governments and nations to follow their lead.”

“The UN Security Council is still operating under the post-World War II reactionary laws and has, therefore, lost its efficiency and reliability,” he added.

Earlier on Monday, the Islamic Republic signed a nuclear declaration following trilateral talks with Brazil and Turkey, following intensified efforts between the three countries to reach a diplomatic solution to the standoff over Iran’s nuclear program.

Tehran is facing a fourth round of tougher UN sanctions fiercely pursued by the US and its European allies. It was widely believed that a nuclear fuel swap deal would render the UNSC sanction unnecessary, but the European Union immediately expressed reserve about the deal answering all “concerns.”

The president put forward a two-part proposal to prevent “oppressive powers from sacrificing the interests of nations for their personal gain and destabilizing the world by means of employing weapons and power over logic and reason.”

The proposal calls for the formation of two permanent commissions to ease policy-making and economic decisions within the group.

“Considering the current challenges faced by the global economy…it is proposed that a specialized committee be formed to study ways to strengthen relations and expand interactions in various fields between the G15 members,” Ahmadinejad said, adding that impoverished nations were bearing the brunt of bad economic policies by affluent countries.
