Iran calls MacCain’s visit to Syria ‘illegal’

The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday strongly condemned the “illegal entry” of U.S. Senator John McCain into Syrian territory, describing it as an act of interference in the internal affairs of the Arab country.
“The illegal entry of the U.S. senator into Syrian territory… and his meeting with commanders of armed groups opposed to the government go against the U.S. government’s claim that it is seeking a political said to the Syrian crisis,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araghchi stated.

He added that the double-standard approach adopted by the U.S. undermined international efforts to hold a conference on the Syrian conflict in Geneva.
