“The exacerbation of the security and policing atmosphere and also the detention and imprisonment of political activists on unfounded excuses will not settle the existing problems and will make them even more complicated instead,” Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said on Sunday.

She expressed the hope that the Bahraini officials would prepare the ground for constructive talks between the people and the government and materialize people’s legitimate demands through confidence-building measures.

The Bahraini uprising began in mid-February 2011.

The Manama regime promptly launched a brutal crackdown on the peaceful protests and called in Saudi-led Arab forces from neighboring states.

Scores of people have been killed in the crackdown, and the security forces have detained hundreds, including doctors and nurses.

Bahrainis say they will continue holding demonstrations until their demand for the establishment of a democratically elected government is met.

In a latest development, a Bahrain court jailed five more activists for periods up to 10 years after convicting them of allegedly attacking a government building with petrol bombs, a judicial source said on Thursday.

Three defendants were sentenced to 10 years in prison, and two others were jailed for three years over the attack on Dar al-Hukumah, the source said.
