Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has congratulated his newly elected Georgian counterpart, Giorgi Margvelashvili, on his victory.

“The deep and unbreakable friendship between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Georgia has its roots in ancient ties and numerous cultural commonalities,” Rouhani said in a Sunday message to Margvelashvili.

Rouhani expressed hope that the two countries would further enhance mutual ties and forge closer cooperation at regional and international levels on all fronts.

Margvelashvili, an ally of Georgia’s Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, won the October 27 presidential election with 62 percent of the vote.

Margvelashvili defeated outgoing President Mikhail Saakashvili’s candidate, David Bakradze, who received less than 22 percent support.

Georgia’s president elect is a member of the Georgian Dream party which was founded in 2012 by Ivanishvili that won the 2012 parliamentary election.

Ivanishvili, a billionaire businessman, is to step down as prime minister on November 24, a week after Margvelashvili’s inauguration.
