The Iranian Foreign Ministry has censured a recent report by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Iran’s human rights record as “unacceptable and politically-motivated.”

“Given its non-legal and unsubstantiated accusations and claims, this report lacks legal credibility,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said on Thursday in reaction to a report that Ban submitted to the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday.

“It is expected of the UN secretary general to act fairly and in line with cooperation and interaction based on the UN’s mechanisms while reviewing the human rights situation in countries, including in Iran, and avoid interference in the internal affairs (of countries), and avoid the use of general and vague statements that are contrary to international principles and regulations,” she added.

The report by the UN chief accused the new Iranian administration of having failed to improve the situation of human rights in the country.

Afkham added, “Parts of the released report undercut and completely tarnish the impartial position of the UN secretary general. The United Nations must not be exploited as a political tool to attack and harm the image of independent states and to violate the internal regulations of countries.”

On Wednesday, Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani condemned Ban’s comments as interference in Iran’s internal affairs.

Ayatollah Larijani also rejected the allegation that political prisoners and members of religious minorities are executed in Iran, saying the claim is part of the enemies’ campaign of lies against the Islamic Republic.

He stressed that no Iranian has been executed on the grounds of their faith, but noted that the country would punish armed militants regardless of their religion.
