Iranian Ambassador to Tbilisi Majid Saber and Georgia’s former President Eduard Shevardnadze in a meeting on Saturday underlined enhancement of bilateral ties and cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on Friday, the two sides called for the further development of mutual cooperation between Iran and Georgia in different fields.

Shevardnadze pointed to the age-old relations between Iran and Georgia, and reiterated the necessity for Tehran and Tbilisi to further increase their mutual cooperation.

The Iranian envoy, for his part, also underlined the need for the consolidation of the relations between Iran and Georgia, and described Shevardnadze’s role in this regard as positive.

Shevardnadze was the first and former Georgian president (1995-2003). He was also former Soviet Union’s foreign minister during the tenure of Soviet Union’s last president Mikhail Gorbachev.

Iran and Georgia have in recent years accelerated their efforts to expand bilateral and regional cooperation in all the various fields.

Early December, Saber had underlined Iran’s willingness to further expand bilateral relations with Georgia.

“Iran is committed to develop relations with Georgia in all fields,” Saber said at that time, addressing a ceremony to start Iran’s Cultural Week in Georgian city of Kutaisi.
