Iran, Greece call for cooperation

The Iranian foreign minister says Iran and Greece can once again play an influential and constructive role regarding regional and international matters.

“Iran and Greece have had bilateral or multilateral cooperation regarding certain regional matters and have played a constructive role in the past,” Manouchehr Mottaki said on Monday.

“This role can be played again regarding matters pertaining to the region or the international community in the future,” he added,

Mottaki stressed the Islamic Republic’s readiness to help resolve issues such as drug trafficking, illegal immigration as well as the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Iranian foreign minister met with Greek President Karolos Papoulias in Athens on Monday.

Papoulias for his part emphasized on the shared potentials between the two nations and expressed his country’s readiness to cooperate with Iran in tackling global issues.

The Greek president said his country supported a peaceful resolution to Iran’s nuclear program.

He said that based on Greece’s foreign policy and the European Union’s policies his country supported the nuclear talks as a means of resolving the issue stressing that all other means could end up being disastrous.

In a meeting with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York in September, Iranian President Mhmoud Ahmadinejad underscored that Iran and Greece enjoy a common stance on regional and international issues, calling for the further expansion of ties to establish sustainable peace and security.
