Iran: Iraq pullout, US election ploy

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast says the US withdrawal from Iraq is an election strategy ahead of the US midterm congressional vote.

“That they magnify the US pullout form Iraq is mainly linked with the US internal affairs and its future events including the upcoming elections,” Mehmanparast said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

The Iranian spokesperson further pointed out that the US stance toward the pullout was contradictory as Washington said it was pulling out its forces from Iraq while continued to build more military bases in the war-torn country.

Democrats in America fear that their rival Republicans may get control of the House of Representatives and even come close to the Senate in November’s congressional elections as most Americans seem to be concerned with economy rather than war and fighting terrorism.

A recent poll by Gallup revealed earlier this month that two-thirds of respondents were mainly concerned about economy, jobs and deficit rather than wars.

According to the opinion poll, only four percent of voters consider “wars in general” as their top concern, The Financial Times reported on Monday.

During his weekly press conference, Mehmanparast also talked about the International Quds Day and the direct peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

He said that the Quds Day, which was designated by the late founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini, has changed global attitude toward Israel.

The Quds Day is observed on the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, during which Muslims across the world hold rallies in support of Palestinians.

Mehmanparast also noted that the US-brokered peace talks do not seem to be successful and said the only solution to the conflict is to recognize and respect the rights of Palestinians.
