Iran launches production of carbon fiber

Iran has launched the first domestically- run production line of carbon fiber, a strategic material used in defense systems as well as civilian projects.

Iran’s Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony that Iran has joined the 10 countries possessing the technology .

He said that the project is of high significance to Iran since all stages of the production and launch are domestically run.

He said that sanctions imposed against the country banned other countries from providing Iran with the material and the technology needed to produce it.

Vahidi said that carbon fiber is used in production of advanced and smart defense systems including nozzle heat shields, lightweight composite bodies of motors in solid-fuel missiles, wings and body of various types of fighter jets and civilian planes, as well as the body of light weapons.

He said that the material is also used in civilian projects, including reinforcement of buildings, construction of oil and gas drilling and exploration platforms, production of plane brakes and train carriages as well as sports equipment.

Carbon fiber has high flexibility, high strength, low weight and high tolerance for heat.
