Iran will probably hold joint naval drills with certain regional and extra-regional countries, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says.

“We hope that we will stage joint naval maneuvers with some regional and even extra-regional countries during this [Iranian calendar] year (ending on March 20, 2017),” Sayyari told reporters on the sidelines of International Quds Day rallies in Tehran on Friday.

He added that the Iranian Army’s naval units have provided full security for the country’s routes and vessels in high seas.

In recent years, Iran has made major breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in the production of important military equipment and systems.

The country has also conducted major military drills to enhance the defense capabilities of its Armed Forces and to test modern military tactics and state-of-the-art equipment.

The Islamic Republic maintains that its military might poses no threat to other countries, and that its defense doctrine is merely based on deterrence.

Hailing people’s huge participation in International Quds Day rallies, Sayyari said the demonstrations show “the determination and unity of the Muslim ummah against the Zionist regime.”

He added that the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, dubbed the last Friday of the lunar fasting month of Ramadan as the International Quds Day so that Muslims would never forget that their common enemy is the Israeli regime.

The Iranian commander emphasized that the Daesh terrorist group has been formed to divert Muslims’ attention from the Palestinian issue, and called on Muslims to remain vigilant and prevent the enemy from implementing its plans.

“Palestine is the most important issue of the Muslim world,” Sayyari pointed out.

Each year, millions of people around the world staged rallies on the International Quds Day to voice their support for the Palestinian nation and repeat their call for an end to the Israeli regime’s atrocities and its occupation of the Palestinian territories.
