Iran Majlis rejects audit office probe

A majority of Iranian lawmakers have opposed a motion to investigate the conduct of the country’s audit office during the seventh Majlis (parliament).

The motion proposed by five members of the parliament to probe the performance of the audit office during the previous Majlis was defeated after it was put to a vote during Tuesday’s open session.

Out of 216 present legislators, 104 voted against the proposal, while 94 voted in favor and eight abstained, IRNA reported.

One of the supporters of the motion, Elyas Naderan, questioned the conduct of the audit office, accusing it of being involved in personal affairs of individuals, which he said led to the arrest of some officials in Iran’s Insurance Company.

“The audit office was interfering in disputes and private affairs [of individuals], which resulted in the detention of several people, who were later cleared of the charges,” Naderan said.

Parviz Sarvari, Alireza Zakani, Zohreh Elahian and Hossien Nejabat, all representatives of Tehran province, were the other four MPs who called for the investigation.
