Iran makes new herbal anticancer pills

Iranian researchers have succeeded in developing a new herbal medication effective in treating gastrointestinal tumors for the first time in the world.

According to Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Marzieh Vahid Dastgerdi, ‘Spinal Z’ is the first drug in the world which can impede the progress of cancers in the upper gastrointestinal tract particularly stomach.

She went on to say that all the manufacturing process of the new drug, which had long been used in the traditional Iranian medicine, have been performed by the Iranian researchers in the past 10 years.

The use of Spinal Z, produced from a certain herb native to Iran, is not associated with any serious side effects such as reduced number of white blood cells and infection. Nausea, however, was the only adverse effect seen in the consumers.

The drug is now available, in the form of pill and capsule, in certain pharmacies in different parts of the country.

Latest figures have revealed that 21 individuals from among every 1000 Iranians die from stomach cancer every year. The condition is reported to be more prevalent in the western provinces and least prevalent in Bushehr.
