Iran Launches Runways for Ultralight Aircraft along Borders

The Iranian Border Guard Units have launched runways for the landing of ultralight aircraft in border areas, a senior police commander announced on Tuesday.
“We have built runways for ultralight airplanes in some border regions for reconnaissance and intelligence purposes,” Commander of the Iranian Border Guard Units General Hossein Zolfaqari said today, adding, “The power and capabilities of the country’s border guard units are on the increase every day.”

Meantime, he said that construction of roads and border fortifications, specifically in Southeastern and Northwestern regions, continues and border development projects are rapidly being implemented.

Earlier this year, Zolfaqari said the country’s border guards have begun testing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for patrolling the country’s Eastern borders.

“The implementation of this project has begun in South Khorassan and Sistan and Baluchestan Provinces, and multiple daily flights are conducted to evaluate the performance of the drones,” the Iranian commander said in March.

He added that upon the completion of the pilot project, Iranian border guards will use UAVs to patrol borders.

Iran has 5,440 kilometers of land borders. The country shares its Northern borders with Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan which extend for more than 2,000 kilometers, including about 650 kilometers of water along the Southern shore of the Caspian Sea. Iran’s Western borders are with Turkey and Iraq, and to the East with Afghanistan and Pakistan.
