Iran nuclear deal to boost global security: Russia

A senior Russian official says the recent nuclear deal between Tehran and the Sextet of world powers will both strengthen “global security” and ease illegal sanctions imposed on Iran.

In an interview with the Voice of Russia on Thursday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stressed the significance of the landmark nuclear deal between Iran and the six world powers – the US, Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany – in the strengthening of regional and global security.

“As to global security, this agreement serves to reinforce the international legal framework and secures it against the brute-force approach,” added the Russian official.

Ryabkov stated that the accord, considering “the prospect of quick sanctions relief,” will also ease the pressure on Iran’s economy.

Iran and the six major world powers sealed a historic interim agreement in Geneva on November 24 in an effort to set the stage for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with the Islamic Republic over the country’s nuclear energy program.

In exchange for Tehran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities for six months, the six countries have agreed to lift some of the existing sanctions against Iran.

Ryabkov went on to say, “In a nutshell, this is all what Russia has been vying for over the past ten years. So we are satisfied with the results we’ve managed to achieve in the outgoing year.”

On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov hailed the Geneva deal as “very positive,” saying it was made through collective efforts.
