Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the current level of Tehran-Muscat relations can set the example for other countries in the region.

Rouhani made the remarks in a meeting with Oman’s King Sultan Qaboos in Muscat. The Iranian president arrived in the Omani capital on Wednesday, for a two-day visit on the invitation of the Omani King.

Heading a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, the Iranian president was welcomed by Omani Prime Minister Fahd bin Mahmoud al Said and Foreign Minister Youssef bin Alawi bin Abdullah upon his arrival.

The two heads of states also discussed regional issues, including the crisis in Syria and agreed to expand cooperation in the fields of energy, shipping, customs, finance, tourism and education.

Speaking to reporters ahead of his departure, Rouhani said the Islamic Republic attaches great significance to relations with Muslim countries, particularly its neighboring states.

The sensitivity of the Strait of Hormuz adds special importance to the southern littoral countries of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, Rouhani added.

Oman is the first country in the Persian Gulf to be visited by President Rouhani after he assumed office in August.

The Omani Sultan Qaboos paid an official visit to Iran in late August 2013 as the first head of state to visit Tehran after President Rouhani was inaugurated in a ceremony on August 4.

Iran and Oman, which share control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, maintain cordial relations.
