Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan underlined Tehran’s opposition to the unilateral actions launched by the US and its allies in Iraq and Syria under the pretext of fighting terrorism.
“Such actions can further contribute to the continued survival and strengthening of the roots of terrorism in the region and any measure in Iraq and Syria should be taken through coordination with the central governments in those countries,” Dehqan said in a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Khalid al-Obeidi in Tehran on Monday.

“Supporting Iraq’s unity and territorial integrity, promotion of democracy based on the mechanisms predicted in the constitution, full establishment of security and assisting Iraq’s all-out progress are among the Islamic Republic of Iran’s principled and sustained policies,” he added.

Dehqan also underscored Iran’s readiness to further consolidate defensive-military cooperation with Iraq and reinvigorate the Iraqi army.

Al-Obeidi, heading a high-ranking military delegation, arrived in Tehran today at the invitation of Brigadier General Dehqan.

During the visit, the two countries will confer on the the enhancement of defense cooperation and fighting terrorism.

Iran and Iraq have a 1,400-km shared border.

In October, in a meeting between Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, the Iranian official said that restless campaign against Takfiri terrorists and their supporters stands atop Iran-Iraq cooperation agenda.
