Iran and the P5+1 group of countries have underlined the need for the removal of potential obstacles in the way of implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) recently clinched between the two sides over Tehran’s nuclear program, says a senior Iranian negotiator.

On Monday, the foreign ministers of Iran and the six countries of the P5+1 met in New York for the first time since the conclusion of the JCPOA in July to discuss ways of implementing the accord. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini as well as the deputy foreign ministers of Iran and the P5+1 group were also present in the meeting.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, who was present in the meeting, said on Tuesday that during the meeting, the two sides reviewed the preliminary measures related to the implementation of the JCPOA both on the issue of the removal of the anti-Iran sanctions and the country’s nuclear activities.

The Iranian official said that the foreign ministers voiced satisfaction with the fact that the P5+1 countries have completed the legal procedures regarding the implementation of the JCPOA, and expressed hope that the implementation of the accord will begin with the completion of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis)’s review of it.

Earlier in August, the Iranian Parliament appointed 15 lawmakers as members of an ad hoc committee tasked with reviewing the JCPOA.

During the Monday meeting, the two sides also discussed the process of the implementation of a road map signed between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as the positive assessment of IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano in this regard, Araqchi said.
