Iran-P5+1 talks in constructive phase: Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says the negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers have entered a constructive phase.

The outcomes of the expert-level meeting between Iran and the P5+1 group are reassuring, Lavrov said in a joint press conference with his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle in Moscow on Thursday.

The technical talks were held in Istanbul on Tuesday with the participation of representatives and experts from Iran and the P5+1, comprising Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany.

Lavrov added that Russia and Germany are cooperating within the framework of the P5+1 considerations to find a solution to Iran’s nuclear energy issue.

We are trying to solve the issue in a step-by-step fashion and through reciprocal measures, he said.

Following the expert-level meeting in Istanbul, the European Union in a statement said the technical talks will continue with a meeting between EU’s Deputy Secretary General for the External Action Service Helga Schmid and Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Dr. Ali Baqeri.

“The experts explored positions on a number of technical subjects. The meeting lasted for a full day ending at 1 am,” the statement from the office of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said on Wednesday.

“The experts provided further detail of a proposal given to Iran in Baghdad while Iran shared further detail of their proposal,” it added.
