Iran: Practical move needed for NPT

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast says ‘practical’ strategies are needed for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“Practical strategies should be adopted to implement the NPT. These strategies will provide a guarantee to member and non-member states of the treaty,” Mehmanparast was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying on Monday.

“In return for their commitments, the NPT signatories demand their rights but political pressure (exerted) by certain countries outside responsibilities of the International Atomic Energy Agency will prevent them from exercising their rights,” he added.

The spokesman also stressed that all articles of the NPT should be seriously taken into consideration to help achieve its goals.

“Nuclear-armed countries should move towards nuclear disarmament,” Mehmanparast further explained.

He said that the international nuclear disarmament conference, held in Tehran this week, discussed contradictory and discriminatory cases in the NPT and added that such issues can be officially proposed to the NPT Review Conference which is scheduled to be held in New York in May.

“The Tehran conference was the beginning of a big move to respond to ideals and concerns of the international community,” the Iranian spokesperson concluded.
