Iran presence benefits Syria confab

UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi says Iran’s presence in the upcoming Geneva 2 conference on the ongoing crisis in Syria would be of great benefit.

According to IRIB, speaking in an exclusive interview with the Arabic-language al-Arabiya news network on Sunday, Brahimi said it would be beneficial if Iran takes part in the conference, noting that there is the possibility of inviting Iran.
He further noted that Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi, and representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and other Arab countries will also be invited.
Brahimi said that the Geneva 2 conference will differ from its predecessor as both the Syrian government and the opposition will participate by sending separate delegations.
He stated that both the Syrian government and opposition should attend the conference without setting any preconditions.
Brahimi added that he would like to see one delegation representing the opposition, including all its various parties.
