Iran pressing on with nuclear talks

Iran says it is studying other proposals for a nuclear fuel swap proposal in line with efforts to end the standoff over the country’s nuclear program.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Saturday that Iran is also pressing on with talks in the International Atomic Energy Agency over the nuclear fuel swap proposal.

“After Iran relayed its need to provide fuel for its research reactor to the IAEA and after the agency suggested Russia, France and the US as suppliers negotiations began in Vienna that are still ongoing,” Mehmanparast told reports.

Dismissing US allegation that Tehran is “buying time” through the negotiations, Mehmanparast went on to highlight the need for agreements on the quantity, as well as the time and location of such a swap.

Despite these challenges, “Turkey and Brazil are among the countries that have proposed solutions and these solutions indicate that it is possible to reach a swap deal and arrive at mutual understanding,” the spokesman stressed.

He added that Iran remains “seriously” committed to obtaining fuel for its research reactor and that “stalling” is not in line with Iran’s policies.

Iran rejects Western accusation that it is harboring a secret agenda for developing nuclear weapons, stressing that as an IAEA member and signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has every right to a peaceful nuclear program.
