Iran rejects IAEA pyroprocessing claim

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali-Akbar Salehi rejects reports that Iran intends to use spent fuel rods for pyroprocessing experiments.

Salehi said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has misunderstood the nature of the experiments which the AEOI would like to conduct in the future, adding that Iran had explained the situation to the UN agency in a letter.

Salehi rejected claims that nuclear gear had been misplaced in the Jabr Ibn Hayan Multipurpose Research Laboratory and said, “We will provide the agency with necessary documents in this regard at a later date and we hope that the agency does not repeat such mistakes in future as it will only damage its reputation.”

Salehi questioned the IAEA reports failure to mention the nuclear fuel swap declaration signed between Iran, Brazil and Turkey in Tehran on May 17.

“Such an approach does not indicate good intentions on behalf of the agency and we hope that the agency will change its approach,” ISNA quoted Salehi as saying.

The IAEA report came two weeks after the issuance of Tehran declaration, which was hailed by many countries as a positive move toward resolving the standoff over Iran’s nuclear program.

Ignoring the declaration, the US stepped up efforts to rally support for the imposition of a fourth round of UN sanctions against Iran.
