Iran Rejects Media Reports on Hacking US Banks

Iran’s civil defense chief categorically rejected the recent reports by American officials and media outlets alleging that Iran has hacked several US banks, saying that westerners are trying to portray Iran as a threat in cyberspace to achieve their goals.

“Iran has not hacked the US banks,” Head of Iran’s Civil Defense Organization Gholam Reza Jalali told FNA on Sunday.

The western media reports alleged on Friday that Muslim hackers have repeatedly attacked Bank of America Corp, JPMorgan Chase & Co and Citigroup Inc over the past year as part of a broad cyber campaign targeting the United States.

Speaking to NBC News, US national security officials alleged that the continuing cyber attacks this week that slowed the websites of JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America are being carried out by Iran.

Security sources told Chicago Tribune and NBC News that the attacks on the three largest US banks originated in Iran, but it is not clear if they were launched by the state, groups working on behalf of the government, or “patriotic” citizens.

The sources, who requested anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the matter, did not present any evidence to corroborate their claims against Iran.

In reply, Jalali dismissed the reports, saying that these reports are aimed at demonizing Iran in cyberspace to portray the country as a global threat to cyber security and justify the US and Israeli cyber attacks on Iran.
